Atiqullah jailed for 13 years

wife for 3 years The Globe-Janakantha Group chairman, Atiqullah Khan Masud, also editor and publisher of the daily Janakantha, was on Thursday jailed for 13 years on charge of amassing illegal wealth and hiding assets in his wealth statements submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission. M Sirajul Islam, the judge of the special judge’s court 7 set up on the Jatiya Sangsad complex, also sentenced Atiqullah’s wife Shamima A Khan to imprisonment for three years for abetting her husband in the crimes. The court ordered confiscation of Atiqullah’s wealth of Tk 1.14 crore which was disproportionate to his known sources of income. The court also fined Atiqullah Tk 10 lakh and Shamima Tk 1 lakh. If they fail to pay the fines, Atiqullah will need to serve one more year and Shamima six months in jail. Shamima’s sentence will come into execution after her arrest or surrender as she is in hiding, the court said in the verdict. Atiqullah was sentenced to imprisonment for 10 years for amassing wealth of Tk 1.14 crore beyond his known sources of income and 3 years for hiding assets of Tk 1.41 crore in his wealth statement. The court ordered c onsecutive execution of the sentences, meaning Atiqullah will need to serve both the sentences. The sentences will be effective from May 7, 2007, when he was arrested by the joint forces. The same court on March 6, 9 and 20 sentenced Atiqullah to a total of 21 years’ imprisonment, seven years each in three cases on charge fraudulence. The commission filed the case with the Ramna police on September 30, 2007 against Atiqullah, his wife and two sons — Mishal A Khan and Jishal A Khan. His wife and two sons were accused of abetting him. The commission, however, dropped the names of his sons off the charge sheet.
